Tips for Sleeping on Planes

Whether it is for business or pleasure, when we fly, we want to feel rested and ready when the flight is over. On longer flights getting some rest might figure into feeling good when one lands. While there are many distractions on a flight that might keep some up, others just don’t sleep well while flying, quiet plane or no.

Over the counter medications or alcohol may help some people relax and sleep, however these will usually leave one groggy after waking.

Fliers should do their best to be comfy. Wear loose fitting and, if you need them, warm clothes. Try to use the restroom before falling asleep. Undo your belt and other restrictive accessories. Let your neighbors know you want to try and sleep through the flight.

It is best to bring one’s own comfort items like pillows and blankets as these are becoming more and more rare on flights. Noise canceling headphones, music, white noise, noise generators or some television episodes downloaded from your favorite streaming app help some people sleep.

The cues of your nighttime routine can help your brain prepare for sleep. Try sticking to any of them you can during the flight. Make your routines portable, not only for the plane, but your destination as well. Likewise, following your rituals will prepare your brain for sleep in an unfamiliar place and time zone.

The most important thing to remember is that if you can’t sleep, it is best not to stress out about it. Relax as much as you can. Even just lying back, shutting your eyes and letting your mind wander can be restful.

Four Prescriptions for Keeping Healthy on Vacation

For those of us unlucky enough to have experienced illness during a vacation, there is no doubt we would warn others about how being ill while on vacation and especially during travel is especially uncomfortable. Combine that with the unfamiliarity of a new place and you’ve got a recipe for stress and disaster.

Keeping in mind simple things like sticking to bottled water, avoiding over indulging in especially unusual foods, and washing your hands regularly can go a long way in avoiding illness on your next vacation.

Though each vacation is a celebration and an extra glass of wine may sound like a great idea at the time, the aftermath may leave one stuck in a hotel room or not enjoying their R&R to the fullest. If you have several adult beverages in an evening, have a glass of water before you go to bed.

Depending on your destination, checking out warnings about widespread illness or water conditions at the CDC’s website www.cdc.gov/travel and the Department of State’s website on Travel http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html might let you avoid unnecessary illness. For some destinations, immunizations may be required or at least a good idea.

Make sure you bring plenty of your prescription and over-the-counter medications. Familiar brands and dosages may not be available in some destinations and getting a prescription filled may not be possible or at the least a hassle.

Finally, sleep. Most of us want to make the most of our time off and see and do as much as possible. Over simple fatigue can make one surprisingly more susceptible to illness. Especially when dealing with jet lag, taking the time to get some proper rest during the first twenty-four hours of your vacation and through out your stay will help one stay healthy and feel mentally aware and emotionally fit to enjoy their vacation to the fullest.
