New Mega Airport Opens in Chengdu, China.

China’s long anticipated Chengdu Tianfu International Airport has begun operating and is offering travelers a doorway to the home of their rich cultural heritage.

The very first flight, flown by Sichuan Airlines, took off last Sunday just before noon and bound for Beijing.

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province. It is third city in the country to have two international airports. The others are Shanghai and Beijing.

The final constructed cost of the airport was about 10.8 billion USD or 70 billion Chinese yuan. The first phase of the international aviation hub can handle an impressive 60 million passengers per year which will further open the country’s southwest region to the world.

There three runways and two terminals that cover a total area of 710,000 square meters are currently in operation. Local state media reported that eventually the airport will house terminals cover 1.4 million square meters and be able to handle 120 million passengers annually.
